Another cold day here. The path from the icebreaker has closed back up and iced over. We are operating on a skeleton crew until we get temperatures at least in the mid-40’s. The mechanical department is the exception as there is just too big of a mechanical work load for any slacking off. When it gets just a bit warmer we can start doing bottom painting prep work which will speed things up in the spring. We also have a few bilge painting jobs to do where we can stick a portable heater in the boat overnight and paint the next morning.
We had another boat come in just before the closing of the path. Rumsey and Carlos are preparing to pull the mast. Not sure where the boat came from or who owns it. Once again, we are on a need to know basis. I’m just glad it is not me out there!
Paul is putting teak trim on the dash of a Bristol Skiff. We finished the insurance job on the rails and decided the boat needed a bit of customizing before turning it loose.
On one boat we found some high moisture readings and cut a small hole to investigate. I missed the real picture, but water was pouring out like Niagara Falls – here you can only see a trace of the wet stain. We hooked vacuum cleaners to the hole to pull the moisture out (it takes quite a while!) Fortunately it was not balsa core. We suspect the water got into the hull via bad joints on the cap rail.
